Inquiry in Grade One |

Our Social unit of "My Family" gave rise to an inquiry project. We knew we needed to learn about our families; how they were the same, how they were different, and what were the responsibilities of family members. We decided that a good way to find out about our families would be to ask questions. We created interview questions together. First, the students talked about what they wanted to know about their family member. When they had decided on questions we gathered around the aver-key and I typed in the questions that the students dictated. Students took the interview questions home on the weekend and interviewed a family member. We did one family member at a time; mom, dad, and siblings/cousins. Students took the answers to the interview questions and turned them into fact statements. For themselves, the students wrote personal fact statements and then inserted a digital picture. Around this time we started thinking about how big this project would be. As everyone's final product would look very different, and students were working at their own speed, we thought that we should have some parameters to help us stay on track. Together we developed a rubric to help us remember what our final should look like. The fact statements were then typed into a power point slide. Each family member had one slide, with fact statements and a picture of the family member that was drawn on the paint program. The students finished up their power points by creating slide transitions and effects.
